Age 11

When I was eleven something life changing happened. We got our very first DOG. Amanda had been working on my parents for a very long time. We still had the cats but a dog was a different animal entirely. If I remember correctly this is how the story of Summer goes...
Somehow my parents decided that this day was the first day to go look for a dog, umm puppy. We headed out to the Denver Dumb Friends League. We looked at about 4 different puppies. None of them were right. We liked one but it was a terrier and mom and dad weren't sure about terriers. So somehow we found out that the Aurora Animal Shelter had a litter of puppies. So we went... Well in my mind the shelter was just down the street but I've to where I remember it being and it definitely isn't where I remember. We walked into the shelter, which is much different than the Dumb Friends League, and saw Summer with her litter and her mom. I think there were something like 5 puppies in her litter. Some brown and white, some mostly black and Summer who was black and white. We got her out of her kennel/dog run and held her. She promptly snuggled into our hair and shook with fear. She had just recently arrived at the shelter and was terrified of the noise. Well...we were sold. I don't think my parents thought we'd end up with a dog that day but we did. And what an amazing dog she was.
It was near the Fourth of July and we tried to come up with 4th of July sounding names for her but nothing fit. Our neighbor's dog in NJ was named Summer and I guess was a great dog. So Summer she became but not just Summer... Summer of '91.
The first night home we all slept outside of her kennel and took her out to the bathroom. We loved that dog.
She also got to be in the neighborhood 4th of July Parade.
Other than getting a dog we also went to Oklahoma to visit my grandpa and got to ride the horses. A few days on the farm is great for any kid.

I think we actually only got to see 2 puppies at DDFL. One was a lab mix and too hyper and the terrier had a hold. I am pretty sure we visited with Summer and her siblings in an office. Also, I am pretty sure we had to pick a female. Summer was the best first dog to ever have!
